Migraines and CBD

Migraines and CBD is an active area of current scientific research. However, CBD has been used to treat migraines since at least the height of the Roman Empire and very likely back as far as the earliest Mesopotamian cultures.

Anyone who suffers from migraines can attest to the fact that once a migraine gets past the earliest stages, there is no over the counter medication that will stop it. Furthermore, these are not normal headaches! The pain is often so excruciating that people will actually beg people to please “just shoot me and put me out of my misery” and literally mean it (well almost). Therefore, it is very exciting that CBD oils are being scientifically proven to be so effective against migraines.

With the iron clad documentation of the existence of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) less than a decade ago (long suspected before this time), it makes perfect sense why the cannabinoids like CBD can be so effective in alleviating migraines. endocannabinoid system (ECS). When cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid type-1 receptors, they block the pain and provide a system wide cascading of events that eliminate the factors that lead to the migraine. In essence, they inhibit the neurotransmission of pain signals and reduce the inflammatory response that is thought to be associated with migraine headaches.

A study involving the effect of medical marijuana on migraine headache frequency was published in the May 2016 issue of the journal, Pharmacotherapy. 122 people at two medical clinics who suffered from frequent and severe migraines participated. They agreed to test medical marijuana’s therapeutic effect on their migraines. The study period lasted from January 2010 to September 2014. During this period, researchers found that the average number of migraines decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 across all participants taking medical marijuana for their headaches. This is a very significant drop and some experienced a far greater drop.

What should be noted about the above study is that participants were free to try different forms of medical marijuana, including inhaling it and consuming medical marijuana edibles. Also, there was no tight control on the strains of medical marijuana used or in the amount of CBD that each person got. If you really want to test the relationship of migraines and CBD on yourself and or your loved ones who suffer from these horrific headaches, you would be much better off using a CBD oil (CBD tincture) measured in a syringe, drops, or capsules where you know exactly how much CBD you’re getting and you know which strain and source your CBD is coming from. This way, you can much more accurately determine how CBD is needed to stop a migraine that has already started and prevent them from happening in the first place.

According to the Migrane Research Foundation, about twelve percent of the American population is inflicted by migraines. Ten percent of all children experience them, eighteen percent of women have them, and six percent of men have migraines too. They are more frequent in people aged 25 to 55. Knowing these statistics, the pharmaceutical industry has poured millions of dollars into developing prescription pharmaceutical drugs like trazodone, propranolol, L-5HTP, flunarizine, nimodipine, and papaverine. However, none of these expensive drugs have proven all that effective against migraines. It is high time we use history as a guide and re-discover the the relationship of migraines and CBD. We need to more fully test the effectiveness of CBD oil on stopping and preventing migraines.
