At least 3 million people in the US live with epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that involves recurring seizures. While there is no known cure for Epilepsy, medication can manage it for many of those suffering. There are many, however, who continue to suffer from symptoms even with treatment.
These patients, many of them children, have up until now, been left to suffer from seizures with no recourse. Recently, however, many formerly untreatable patients have found relief from their seizures through regular ingestion of CBD oil.
In many of these cases, patients experience a reduction in the severity and length of their seizures and are finally able to lead normal lives again.
Side Effects of Conventional Treatment
When it comes to treating Epilepsy, the goal is a patient who has no seizures with no side effects, as quickly as possible. While Doctors tirelessly pursue this goal, many people are able to find relief using conventional treatments.
This translates into around 1 million people in the United States who continue to have seizures even with treatment using traditional pharmaceuticals. Up to 40% of those suffering from epilepsy never find adequate relief. It is also responsible for 80% of the medical cost of epilepsy.
Even for those who manage to get rid of the seizures, there are still a number of nasty side-effects to contend with. These include everything from headaches and nausea to more serious problems like double vision, weight gain; even mood and sleep disturbances.
Many patients have been left unsatisfied with traditional treatments and looking for safer, more natural alternatives.
In recent years, CBD oil has been getting a lot of attention for its ability to lessen the frequency and length of seizures in those who are resistant to traditional treatment. For many of those who have been unable to gain control of their epilepsy, CBD has been helpful, with less harmful side-effects.
What is CBD Oil?
Both hemp and marijuana come from the cannabis sativa plant. They are the same genus and species.
Hemp, however, is missing most of the THC, the component that gets you high. This is the single defining characteristic between the two. While CBD and medical marijuana are two very different things, CBD, whether distilled from hemp or marijuana, is the exact same compound.
Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is one of over 100 cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. It’s the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa. It’s being scientifically investigated for numerous reasons, including being a possible cure for epilepsy.
CBD oil is made when CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and added to a carrier oil for either dermal application or ingestion through the mouth.
Some oils are made with cheaper CBD isolate, and while they provide benefits, full spectrum CBD oils are typically considered the best because they give your body access to ALL of the healing cannabinoids found within the hemp plant.
How Does CBD Work?
What most people don’t know, is that the human body has its own system that recognizes and uses cannabinoids.
It’s called the Endocannabinoid system. It was first identified by Raphael Mechoulam in the 1990s and it’s one of the most important discoveries about the human body in recent history.
The Endocannabinoid System is made of fat-based receptors that are found throughout the bodies’ connective tissues and even in the organs.
While research on this system is limited and in its infancy, we have discovered that it seems to operate in just about every system of the body.
In fact, there are currently 65 identified molecular targets of CBD in the human body. Recent studies show that glycine receptors (GlyRs) are an important target for cannabinoids in the central nervous system. A 2012 Study, found that in mice and rats, CBD suppressed chronic inflammatory pain, on multiple occasions, with the same effectiveness.
The cannabinoids in CBD help the body to better utilize its’ own cannabinoids, thus keeping the body in homeostasis.
Benefits of Using CBD Oil
There are a number of reported benefits to using CBD oil on a regular basis, they include:
- Reduced anxiety and stress levels.
- Alleviation of chronic pain.
- Reduced risk of cancer.
- Reduced risk of Diabetes and Obesity.
- Lowered risk of Cardiovascular Disease.
- Better Sleep.
- Alleviation of depression.
- Alleviation of Autism symptoms.
Since there are so many Cannabinoid receptors throughout the body, just about every system can derive benefit from the use of CBD.
Can CBD Be Used as a Cure for Epilepsy?
CBD has been especially helpful in reducing pain in those with chronic conditions where opioids are no longer effective. Anecdotal evidence also points to it being effective against anxiety, depression, insomnia and a number of other ailments.
It has also shown great promise as a potential cure for epilepsy.
Two syndromes, in particular, have responded greatly to treatment with CBD. Both syndromes, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome appear in early childhood. They are characterized by uncontrollable and severe seizures that result in learning disabilities.
Quality of life for those suffering from these syndromes, even with traditional treatment, was usually very low.
The good news is that clinical trials in humans show that CBD provides significant relief for these specific epilepsies. As a result, the FDA fast-tracked a cannabidiol based medication called Epidiolex.
In 2018, it was approved for use with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet syndrome for those as young as two years old.
Other forms of Epilepsy have also responded positively to treatment with CBD oil.
