30.3 million Americans had diabetes in 2015. It was determined the seventh leading cause of death.
If these current trends continue, the CDC predicts 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by 2050.
While diabetes can be managed with medications, living with the disease can be a source of stress and hardship. You may wonder: will I ever be able to get better? Is there even a way to reverse diabetes? Can I use natural medicines like CBD oil for diabetes?
While you should never substitute your prescription medications without your doctor’s approval, CBD oil may be able to help with your diabetes.

What Is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound found in the cannabis plant that has various health benefits. There are two breeds of the cannabis plant: industrial hemp and marijuana. The main difference between the two plants is their total chemical profile.
Marijuana contains high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with varying levels of CBD depending on the strain. THC is another cannabinoid found in cannabis plants and acts as a powerful mind-altering and psychoactive chemical. It’s the basis for marijuana’s illegal status according to the US federal government.
Industrial hemp, on the other hand, contains virtually no THC and high levels of CBD. Until 2018, industrial hemp was also illegal to grow in the US according to the federal government. Although there are still strict regulations, industrial hemp is completely legal.
CBD oil is simply the extract of this CBD-rich industrial hemp plant. As the hemp is concentrated, a high concentration, medicinal CBD oil is produced with scientifically documented benefits. Because CBD oil contains less than 0.3% THC, it is completely legal in all states and you can use it without a prescription.
CBD Oil for Diabetes: Does CBD Oil Help with Diabetes?
CBD oil is not a proven treatment for diabetes or any disease for that matter. However, there are certain benefits that CBD provides which may help you if you suffer from diabetes.
CBD: Diabetes Type 1
Diabetes type 1 is different from type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, type 1 diabetes can be managed but not reversed by diet or healthy lifestyle. This is because the body does not physically make insulin. In type 2 diabetes, there is simply a dysfunction in the way insulin works in the body.
So, in the case of type 1 diabetes, CBD can’t improve the condition. However, it may work if you suffer from type 2 diabetes.
CBD and Type 2 Diabetes
CBD is not a cure for type 2 diabetes (*see note below). But, there are a few mechanisms by which a CBD diabetes regimen may benefit you if you have a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
*Note: While we will not make the claim that CBD is a cure for Type 2 Diabetes, my father (father of the author of this article), after using CBD oil for approximately 5 months was told by his doctor his diabetes was cured and that he no longer needed any medication for it.
CBD as an Anti-Inflammatory
One of the most well-known benefits of CBD is its powerful anti-inflammatory action.
As CBD binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system, the natural cannabinoid receptor system in humans, it produces anti-inflammatory effects. As CBD binds and activates CB2 receptors, it signals genes that produce inflammatory proteins to downregulate. As a result, there are lower levels of inflammatory proteins in the body, reducing inflammation.
Inflammation, CBD, and Diabetes
It is established in the research that there is a link between high levels of inflammatory proteins and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Scientists believe that high inflammation levels lead to insulin resistance, the main risk factor for diabetes. However, the exact role of inflammation in this disease is still relatively unknown.
As a potent anti-inflammatory, CBD may be able to prevent a significant risk factor of diabetes in theory. There are promising animal studies that show CBD reduces the incidence of diabetes. While these results may not necessarily translate to humans, the pendulum is shifting in CBD’s favor.
Regardless, including an anti-inflammatory like CBD in your daily routine can be beneficial. Even though its treatment capacity is theoretical, it is still worth giving a try to see how it works for you. But, make sure you always work with a doctor.
CBD for Diabetes Complications
CBD may improve underlying root causes of diabetes but it can also reduce nagging symptoms that come with diabetes.
Many of the symptoms that come with diabetes are a result of high blood sugar and the oxidative stress it causes. Conditions like kidney failure, heart failure, neuropathy, and even blindness are associated with increased oxidative stress from diabetes.
Increased blood sugar as a result of diabetes leads to the dysfunction of mitochondria, the energy producers of cells. As a result, mitochondria produce more damaging free radicals. As your blood sugar stays high, free radicals continue to increase and put more pressure on the antioxidant systems that neutralize them.
When the free radicals begin to deplete your body’s natural antioxidants, then cells begin to degrade. This causes tissue damage that can lead to the failure of certain organs.
Thankfully, CBD might help.
CBD’s activation of CB2 receptors has been known to decrease free radical production that comes as a result of inflammation. This may lower the overall oxidative stress in the body and decrease the incidence of diabetes complications.
Does CBD Lower Blood Sugar?
Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that CBD lowers blood sugar. However, as previously mentioned, it can combat the negative effects of high blood sugar.
CBD Dosage for Diabetes
There is no standardized dosage currently for diabetes. If you are interested in trying CBD oil for diabetes, it’s best to start low and increase over time. Always consult your doctor when starting a CBD dosage with diabetes.
CBD May Help You If You Suffer From Type 2 Diabetes
While CBD is not a cure for any disease, the mechanisms of CBD may help lower inflammation that is linked to type 2 diabetes. It can also decrease free radical production that leads to diabetes complications.
If you are considering taking CBD oil for diabetes, it’s important that you consult your doctor first. Together, you can work out a dosage that is best for your body.
