Fibromyalgia and CBD

Before we discuss fibromyalgia and CBD, let’s first describe this often misunderstood ailment. People with fibromyalgia are often misdiagnosed as having osteoarthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, or a combination of these progressive diseases because the symptoms are so similar. The symptoms include widespread pain and tenderness in joints and muscles, stiffness, extreme fatigue, insomnia, depression, anxiety, headaches, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to hot and cold, incontinence, abdominal cramps, and a tingling in the extremities.

Because fibromyalgia presents with a cluster of symptoms and the root cause is not understood, fibromyalgia is often referred to as a syndrome or “fibromyalgia syndrome” instead of a disease or illness. Women are about ten times more likely to develop fibromyalgia syndrome but men get it too.

Frankly, the issue of whether or not CBD oil helps with fibromyalgia is highly controversial. On one hand, you have numerous reports from individuals suffering with fibromyalgia that CBD oil works much better than any pharmaceuticals they have ever been prescribed. There are numerous people, like Donna Gregory Burch who runs the National Pain Report, who say it is the most effective thing they tried.

On the other hand, you have the July 2016 study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews that reviewed medical databases of published studies searching for the effect of cannabinoids like CBD on fibromyalgia. In this analysis, they looked at only studies with controlled trials and a duration of at least four weeks. They found two such studies and both used nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid, in a dosage of 1 mg taken before bedtime. They concluded that it had little to no positive or negative effect on fibromyalgia.

The key to the differences in what individuals are reporting and the academic study above may very weel be that the individuals were using extracts from the actual plant, i.e. natural forms of cannabinoids, as opposed to the SYNTHETIC cannabinoid used in the two academic studies analyzed. Furthermore, the natural forms were full spectrum, meaning they contained a number of cannabinoids whereas the SYNTHETIC version contained only one and it is designed to be like THC, not CBD or a similar cannabinoid that has been touted by individuals as being effective. In fact, most pharmaceutical grade high quality CBD oils, like the ones we sell, don’t even contain THC.

However, there is a high concentration of CBD and related non-psychoactive cannabinoids in these full spectrum CBD oils like we sell.

If you put all this together, there seems to be a need for academic studies that test the effectiveness of FULL SPECTRUM CBD OIL, extracted from the plant and from cultivars that are high in CBD and related cannabinoids and contain no (or just trace amounts) of THC. This seems to be the type of cannabinoids that are doing individuals suffering with fibromyalgia the most good.

It should also be noted that people with fibromyalgia often have other related syndromes that CBD is widely reported to help. These ailments include chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel syndrome, cystitis, and endometriosis. Therefore, if you are seeking information on fibromyalgia and CBD, you may be glad to learn that CBD oil has been widely reported to help other health issues that you or your loved ones may have in conjunction with fibromyalgia.
