CBD Oil For Children: Why More Parents Are Using It

Your child is delivering his eighth-grade graduation speech.

You feel grateful. Hopeful.

Then you see him as he prepares to mount the dais. His face is red and blotched. His eyes wide and moist. His hands shake. His breath comes fast and shallow.

He is spiraling into a full-fledged panic attack and you know. It’s over. His social anxiety has won again.

But what if you could spare your child this agony? Wouldn’t you go to any lengths, no matter how controversial?

That is the decision many parents face when considering the use of CBD oil for children.

But what are the side effects of such treatments on young bodies, on brains that are still developing? And do the potential benefits outweigh the risks?

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is a product produced from the cannabis plant, but CBD is not marijuana. It does not get you high and it won’t make you addicted.

What it does do, however, is bind to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. These receptors are, essentially, the body’s own system for fighting pain and reducing anxiety.

It is believed that CBD stimulates the release of the body’s own disease-fighting, feel-good chemicals, thus explaining the medicinal properties with which the cannabis plant has been associated for centuries.

Indeed, the purported benefits of CBD are vast and diverse, positively impacting virtually every bodily structure, from the neurological to the musculoskeletal system.

Best of all, due to improvements in processing and manufacturing processes, medicinal CBD can be found in virtually any form, from tablets and tinctures to gummies and vapes.

This is particularly important for the very young, the very ill, and the elderly, who may have difficulty swallowing traditional medications or tolerating their often harsh side effects.

One other thing to consider, which can help alleviate any concerns you may have, is that CBD Oil can be made from marijuana or from hemp.  When it comes from marijuana, it usually has some level of THC with it that may cause a user to get high.  HOWEVER, when made from hemp, because hemp is naturally very low in THC, the CBD Oil does not get a user high.  In fact, CBD Oil from hemp is below .3% (3/10%) which is why Hemp CBD Oil products are legal in all states without the need for any prescription or medical card.

What is CBD Used for, Exactly?

As you can see, fans of CBD claim that its benefits are virtually limitless. Hard evidence supporting its use as a treatment for specific diseases, however, is still pretty spotty.

In fact, most of the claims by CBD enthusiasts are more anecdotal than empirical at this point.

But that doesn’t mean those claims are wrong. Far from it, in fact.

Indeed, it seems that the issue is a matter of a lack of research, rather than a lack of evidence to support proponents’ claims.

That’s because the research studies that have been conducted thus far are largely positive.

So far, empirical studies have linked CBD to significant improvements in the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease, Parkinson’s, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, to name a few.

Research into CBD’s use in the treatment of epilepsy has been so promising, in fact, that the FDA recently approved the first CBD-based medication, Epidolex, for the treatment of the most serious forms of the seizure disorder.

The Use of CBD Oil for Children

Despite the growing support for the use of cannabis-derived products in the treatment of physical and psychological disorders, however, its use in children remains a particular point of controversy.

To be sure, there are more serious considerations to address when children are involved, perhaps the most significant of which is what long-term impact the substance might have on bodies and brains that are still developing.

The truth is, we still don’t know. There just aren’t enough long-term studies out there as of yet.

What we do know, though, is that the preliminary data are very, very good.

CBD oil, for example, tends to produce for fewer and far less significant side effects than traditional pharmaceuticals used to treat childhood disease and disorders.

Because of this, parents are increasingly turning to CBD oil to aid in the treatment of conditions such as autism, ADHD, and chronic pain, particularly where more standard treatments have failed.

A recent study published by the NIH even found CBD safe and effective in reducing stress, anxiety, panic, and insomnia in children suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Things to Consider

While a small but growing body of evidence suggests that CBD is both effective and safe for kids, there are still some important points to bear in mind before trying it with your own child.

First, CBD oil may interact with certain medications and over-the-counter supplements. So, before beginning any CBD regimen, it’s vital to speak with your child’s doctor or pharmacist.

Second, though the side effects of CBD oil are generally mild, often far milder than those associated with other pharmaceuticals, you should still be prepared for them. It’s vital to be able to recognize which side effects and symptoms are normal when children use CBD–and which are not.

The most common of these effects are drowsiness and dry mouth. But, again, these effects should not be excessive or troubling to your child. If they are, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

After all, when it comes to your child, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

That leads to the final and by far the most important consideration: no matter what, it is imperative that you purchase your child’s CBD products from a reputable provider to ensure the purity and quality of the product.

A recent study by the Utah Poison Control Center found an alarming number of acute poisoning cases caused by the use of contaminated or adulterated CBD products.

This is why you must always know where your child’s CBD comes from and what quality control standards they use in processing and manufacturing their products.

The Takeaway

Childhood should be the happiest time in a person’s life. For far too many children, however, the joy and innocence of youth are robbed from them by illness and injury, by anxiety and fear.

And when a child is hurting, she never hurts alone. There’s perhaps no worse pain for parents than seeing their baby suffer.

That is why now, more than ever, parents are finding hope in the use of CBD oil for children.

Where traditional treatments for childhood disease and injury had failed or had proven to be worse than the cure, CBD products are offering significant relief with minimal side effects.

When used conscientiously, under the advice of a physician and with the assurance of a reputable supplier, CBD products can help parents restore to their children the peace and happiness that every childhood deserves.
