Are you, or one of your loved ones, one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans affected by Tourettes Syndrome?
Are you tired of having doctors treat you like a guessing game, just trying to find a medication that slows down your symptoms?
You’re not alone.
This is why many people with medical illnesses are turning to CBD. Researchers are continually proving the health benefits of CBD oil for diseases like Tourette’s, epilepsy, or chronic pains.
Whether your ailment is with these diseases or you just have trouble sleeping at night, CBD could be the answer you’ve been looking for.
Read on to learn how CBD could help you or your loved ones.
What Is Tourettes?
Tourette Syndrome is a complication of the central nervous system, or CNS, that causes uncontrollable tics. These tics could be motor, vocal, or both.
The disease interacts with multiple parts of the brain, including the basal ganglia. This portion of the brain is responsible for body movements. Doctors think that, with Tourettes, there is a disruption between nerve cells and the neurotransmitters (chemicals that carry messages between them).
Full blown Tourette’s syndrome affects nearly 100,000 Americans, however, many more people have a milder version.
The disease tends to be diagnosed during childhood. While most people do grow out of it, many people do not.
For those people who weren’t fortunate enough to outgrow the disease, they experience multiple doctors throwing multiple prescriptions at them, hoping at least one will work.
This is where CBD comes into play.
What Is CBD and How Does It Work?
So what exactly is CBD? Will it make you high? Is it safe?
These questions answered and more.
What Is It?
Cannabidiol, known by it’s less scientific name CBD, is just one of more than 100 chemicals found in the cannabis plant. Scientists extract the compound and infuse it into an oil that many people use for relief of inflammation, anxiety, depression, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and general pain.
Even though most people associate CBD with cannabis, the FDA considers it a non-psychoactive chemical compound due to it not being or having THC. In other words, it won’t make you giggly or alter your state of mind.
How Does It Work?
CBD works by binding with special neuroreceptors in your brain.
These receptor systems include:
- Serotonin System
- Nuclear Receptors
- Orphan Receptors
- Vanilloid Receptors
For pain management, as an example, the CBD compound suppresses the neuronal transmission of the natural pain-causing chemicals in your brain. CBD has also proven to do this without causing analgesic tolerance. In layman’s terms, your tolerance doesn’t decrease over time like it would with traditional opioids. For this reason, researchers are beginning to suggest CBD as a treatment for chronic pain.
How Can CBD Help Tourettes?
So, what does all this mean for Tourettes?
CBD is an anandamide reuptake inhibitor. In other words, CBD prevents the reabsorption of anandamide, which in turn increases the endocannabinoid levels. Anandamide is a cannabis-like chemical in the brain that is extremely powerful.
By inhibiting the reabsorption, anandamide builds up inside your brain’s synapses, which has neuroprotective effects against muscle spasms, seizures, and, you guessed it, tics.
The FDA approved CBD for treatment of epilepsy due to its antiseizure properties and low risk of adverse side effects. Researchers are conducting more studies in focus on more neurological disorders, like Tourette’s or neurodegeneration.
What Else Can CBD Do?
Aside from Tourette’s, CBD is being used for many other ailments.
As we mentioned earlier, CBD helps with the relief of inflammation, anxiety, and depression.
If you’ve ever been a victim of anxiety or depression, you’re aware of how difficult it can be to treat. Finding the perfect balance in your brain’s chemicals is a tricky game to play.
CBD works to fight depression and anxiety by binding with a receptor called CB1. While the exact relationship between CBD and CB1 is not fully understood yet, however, it’s thought that it works similarly to other SSRIs by altering serotonin signals.
It’s true that many people experience anxiety and depression, but don’t have the financial means for treatment. One of the best benefits of CBD oil is that you don’t need a prescription to use it. This means treatment for those of us without medical insurance or pockets of cash lying around.
Is CBD Legal?
As of 2017, CBD oil is legal in all 50 states!
Before you get too excited, though, there are a few conditions to its legality.
For example, the legality of CBD is determined by its source. If the CBD is extracted from the marijuana plant, meaning the cannabis plant which has more than 0.3% THC content, it is then only legal in states where medical and recreational marijuana is legal. If the CBD is sourced from industrial hemp plants, cannabis plants that have less than 0.3% THC content, however, it is legal in all 50 states.
Note that this is not legal advice and you should always do your own research on the legality in your area.
Where Can I Get CBD?
CBD comes in many different shapes and sizes. You might find CBD in bath bombs, lotions, creams, sprays, or even in certain foods. The most common, and reportedly some of the most effective for Tourettes, are oils, capsules, or gummies.
CBD products are available in many local stores or online. If you don’t have a local store that supports the sale of CBD, check out our site. We offer several different CBD products, many of which often are on sale.
