Considering using CBD oil for ADHD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol is one of several active compounds discovered in the cannabis plant. The use of CBD oil is believed to help relieve pain, anxiety, mood disorders, and even acne from sufferers.
Today, many sing the praises of using CBD oil for diseases and disorders ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer’s, to ADHD.
However, while research suggests that CBD oil can successively benefit patients suffering from epilepsy and other disorders, there’s limited research when it comes to using it with ADHD.
Let’s have a look and delve into what we know so far.
What the Research Says
CBD oil use and ADHD are both associated with impaired attention, inhibition, and functioning. So, many researchers hypothesize that with the use of CBD oil, sufferers of ADHD can reap its benefits.
But while it’s claimed that CBD oil can be used to treat the symptoms of ADHD, at this point there’s limited scientific evidence to back these claims. However, we can tell you that we have many people buying CBD oil from us each month for their children with ADHD or for themselves.
There is, however, positive research that CBD oil can successfully treat people suffering from epilepsy and those suffering from anxiety. It’s thought that due to some of the similarities with these disorders and ADHD, that these benefits could also positively effect ADHD sufferers.
A 2013 study on ADHD and cannabis use provided interesting results.
Researchers discovered after collecting information from 2,811 cannabis users that those who used cannabis daily self-reported symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsive behavior on days they weren’t using cannabis. This would suggest that it was the cannabis that relieved these underlying symptoms.
Another 2015 study explored the relationship between ADHD, depression, and cannabis use in undergraduate students. The researchers understood that some students used cannabis to cope with depressive symptoms. However, the results of these symptoms remained unclear.
It’s widely known that ADHD affects young children and teenagers as well as adults. But because of the stigma attached to cannabis, there are no well-developed studies or trials to look at the relationship between CBD oil and children suffering from ADHD.
However, in a 2015 Facebook poll, 117 parents of children with epilepsy reported treating their child with CBD oil. The parents informed of improvements in sleeping patterns, alertness, and mood with regular use of CBD oil.
Although this poll relates to the relationship of CBD oil and sufferers of epilepsy, it doesn’t mean that CBD oil can’t benefit children suffering from ADHD in a similar way.
How CBD Oil Works
When CBD oil is consumed, the compounds engage with two receptors in the body. These receptors are known as CB1 and CB2 and they have a direct effect on specific parts of the body.
CB1 relates to the brain while CB2 associates with epilepsy.
The compounds from CBD trigger your body to use more of the cannabinoids then it would produce naturally. This increase of cannabinoid use can then lead to several benefits, including reduced anxiety and decreased hyperactivity.
CBD oil is tolerated best at doses of up to 1500 milligrams per day. Depending on how much is used, it can take anywhere between 20 minutes to two hours to experience its effects. It’s recommended to consult a doctor or medical professional to discuss your dosage rather than self-diagnosing.
It’s important to know that although CBD oils are produced from cannabis, they don’t always contain tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. THC is the part of cannabis that makes users experience that ‘high’ or ‘stoned’ feeling when smoking or digesting cannabis.
So, if you use CBD from hemp, which is naturally low in THC, you won’t experience feelings of being ‘high’. But, CBD from marijuana requires you to be cautious as it most likely has high enough levels of THC to cause one to get ‘high’.
Advantages Over Traditional Treatments
There are two categories of ADHD treatment. These are stimulants and non-stimulants.
Stimulant ADHD medication is the traditional choice for treating ADHD and is fast-acting and widely used. In fact, 70 to 80 percent of American children suffering from ADHD use this type of treatment.
However, stimulant medications are commonly linked with several nasty side effects. These include insomnia, poor appetite, weight loss, headache, dry mouth, and mood swings and changes.
The advantages of an alternative ADHD treatment like CBD oil means that worrying side effects like the ones above are minimal. If an individual does suffer from side effects from the consumption of CBD oil for ADHD treatment they are likely to only include an upset stomach or drowsiness.
How to Use CBD Oil
CBD oil taken orally is less likely to cause side effects, so newbies may want to start there. Users simply need to place a couple of drops under the tongue and swallow. Or, one can use cbd capsules or cbd gummies.
It’s also best to start with the smallest dosage possible at the beginning – about 25 milligrams is suggested. As you get used to the process of consuming CBD oil, you can gradually increase the dosage as your body gets used to it.
For immediate relief, vaping CBD oil is a more efficient option. The inhalation process means the compounds are delivered to your bloodstream immediately providing quick relief.
Considering Trying CBD Oil for ADHD?
If you’re considering trying CBD oil for ADHD for you or your child, discuss it with your doctor before making a purchase. This way you can discuss the possible rewards, risks, and dosages to make sure you’re consuming ADHD in the best possible way.
Remember that it may take some time for the benefits to kick in, and you may need to adjust your dosage to better suit your needs.
